Playing in their fifth match in ten days, the Dominican University women's soccer team needed extra time to slip past the visiting Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks, winning on
Lexi Kiotis' tally in the 104
th minute.
"We were not as sharp as we had been but were able to grind out a win," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head coach in his fourth season. "I was very proud of the team's effort, pushing through to get the result we wanted."
The Stars dominated possession throughout regular time, getting off 12 shots to the Scarlet Hawks six and earning 15 corners to Illinois Tech's four through the first ninety minutes.
In the first overtime, the Scarlet Hawks proved to be the aggressors, pinning Dominican in its own end for much of the ten-minute period and getting off the period's lone shot when Tech's Erin James took a shot from distance that was easily covered by
Abbey Brown, the Stars' freshman goalkeeper who picked up her sixth shutout of the season.
Early in the second overtime period, a Scarlet Hawk foul gave the Stars a restart near midfield. After
Josseline Williams headed the restart service,
Alyssa Messina collected and carried into the middle of the field before connecting with
Jackie Viola. Viola was able to thread a pass through a trio of defenders and spring Kiotis into the penalty box where she fired a shot to the right of Illinois Tech's Elizabeth Bremmer, beating the keeper to the near post for the game-winning tally.
The win continues to build upon the record-breaking start to the season for the Stars who are unbeaten through their first eight matches for the first time in program history. The Stars, now 7-0-1, open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Wednesday, traveling to Milwaukee for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff at Alverno College.
