The Dominican University women's soccer team remained unbeaten on the 2017 season, scoring a 7-1 win at Marian University on Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Stars to 9-0-1 on the season and a perfect 2-0-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
Junior
Tania Paez tallied three goals, including what proved to be the game winner in the 41
st minute to give the Stars a 2-1 lead at the break. Paez then added to the Dominican lead early in the second half, scoring her third goal of the match and sixth goal of the season.
Forty-five seconds later Dominican's
Jackie Viola found the back of the goal and the route was on. Before all was said and done,
Tasha Fields,
Alyssa Messina and
Josseline Williams scored a goal apiece in the winning effort.
Dominican outshot the Sabres 27-14 in the match, including a 13-4 margin over the final 45 minutes of play.
Freshman goalkeeper
Abbey Brown picked up the victory in goal, allowing just one goal while making five saves to improve to 8-0-1 in goal on the season.
"Today was a tale of two halves," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' fourth-year head coach. "We had a slow start to the match despite the early goal. After that first score, we just expected things to go our way. I challenged the team at the half to come out and make things happen and we did. We scored early an often in the second half and controlled the game. I was very proud of the way the team responded in the second half."
The Stars continue to navigate league play next week, traveling up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a rematch of the 2016 NACC Tournament Championship match with the MSOE Raiders. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Viets Field.
