The Dominican University women's soccer team went on the road Wednesday night, upending the defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) champions, the MSOE Raiders, by a 3-1 final. The Stars jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first half and hung on to remain unbeaten on the season.
Dominican's
Josseline Williams notched the first goal of the match in just the second minute of play before freshman
Leah Kostos tallied the next two for the Stars who led 3-0 at the half.
"We came out and had a great start to the match," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' fourth-year head coach, following the win. "We put pressure on them right from the start, scoring early. We created some nice opportunities throughout the first half and added two nice goals off of corners."
MSOE cracked through early in the second half, scoring just two minutes into the half when Brook Zidek beat the Stars'
Abbey Brown to pull the Raiders within 3-1.
Dominican reorganized and preserved the win with a nice defensive effort in the second half.
"We came out too complacent in the second half and allowed the early goal," continued Carrillo, "but we were able to work through it and manage the game. I'm very proud of the team for the effort throughout the match. This was a great team win."
The Stars outshot the Raiders 11-9, putting seven shots on goal while allowing just four shots on frame. Dominican also held a 9-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities, scoring on a pair of set pieces to hand the Raiders, snapping a 17-match winning streak for MSOE in conference play dating back to September 2015.
The Stars, now 10-0-1 on the season and 3-0-0 in league play, return to action on Saturday, taking to the West Campus pitch for a 2:45 p.m. kickoff against the Lakeland University Muskies.
