Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stars Cut Down Griffins

The Dominican University men's soccer team moved to 2-0-0 on the 2017 season, scoring a 4-1 win over the Fontbonne University Griffins in River Forest on Sunday afternoon.

Nestor Ascencio tallied the first goal after Jonathan Arzeta was taken down in the box to draw a penalty kick in the sixth minute of play.  Four minutes later, Arzeta finished off a strike of his own after Cesar Franco collected a turnover out near midfield before sending a cross to Isaac Perez along the left flank.  After Perez evaded a defender he slotted a pass along the 18-yard box for Arzeta who then bent a shot under the crossbar and inside the far post for his second goal of the season.

In the 28th minute, Fontbonne drew within a goal when a Dominican foul gave the Griffins a restart just outside the 18-yard box.  Corey Schmidt buried the free kick, beating Dominican's Aaron Menyes to the far post.

The score remained 2-1 into the second half until Adam Yaghmour added a pair of insurance goals, the first coming in the 51st minute with an assist from Michael Delaney before an incredible individual effort ended with a shot from 18 yards out that he bent inside the near post.

After a fairly even first half on the stat sheet, Dominican controlled possession over the final 45, outshooting the Griffins 8-3 in the second half, forcing Fontbonne's Tony Pitaro to make three saves.

"We talked about having a better start to today's game and we did that for the first 15 minutes," commented head coach Erick Baumann following the win. "Unfortunately, we only played well for short stretches of time today.  We need to string together longer positive periods of play that lead to a more complete game over the course of the 90 minutes."

The Stars will look to put together that complete effort on Wednesday, when they hit the road for nearby Chicago to take on the North Park University Vikings.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Holmgren Athletic Complex.
