The Dominican University women's tennis team took to the courts for the first match of the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon in Ripon, Wisconsin, dropping an 8-1 decision to the Ripon College Redhawks.

Despite the lop-sided score, Troy Tonsil was pleased with Dominican's play in the Stars' first action. "The team fought hard and showed a lot of perseverance. They kept battling despite the score."

Elizabeth Cordes tallied the Stars' lone point at the number four singles flight, scoring an 8-2 decision over Ripon's Carly Wesner. "Elizabeth epitomized the perseverance and fight needed to be successful today against our opponent," commented Tonsil. "Her fight in doubles action carried over to a singles win this afternoon."

Cordes and her number one doubles partner,
Heidi Carvajal, kept it close with the Redhawks, dropping their flight 8-6. The Stars' number two doubles combo consisting of
Anusha Mody and
Sharon Neiza, a pair of rookies, also dropped their flight by way of an 8-6 score.

"The effort the team brought into the season-opener was great, and it is a testament to what lies ahead of us. We have a lot of work to do, but are heading in the right direction," commented Tonsil.

Dominican heads to North Park University on Wednesday, September 6
th, for a 4:00 p.m. match in Chicago.
