The Dominican University men's basketball team put six in double-figures scoring in an 89-82 win over the Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Wednesday night at the Igini Sports Forum. The win snaps a four-game losing skid for the Stars, improving the overall record to 4-7 and 2-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
"Tonight was a good team win," claimed Mark White, the Stars' head coach, following the win. "We have been preaching sharing the ball and the importance of good ball movement and tonight we were able to get six guys in double-figures and assisted on 16 of 32 baskets."
After the Cougars went ahead by five, 34-29, on a three by Mitch Pelissier with 4:04 to play in the first half, the Stars used a 14-0 run to close out the first half and open a 43-34 lead at the break. On the run, freshman
Jackson Smith buried a pair of threes and
Nick LaVere got a pair of buckets in transition.
The Stars carried the momentum into the second half, building the lead up to 17, 53-36, on another LaVere bucket in transition with 17:20 to play. Concordia chipped away at the lead, but Dominican never allowed their River Forest rivals to get any closer than four the rest of the night, putting the game away in the final two minutes with a quick 4-0 spurt after the Cougars pulled within 79-75 with just over two minutes to play.
Jonny Woolf capped the Dominican run with a steal and slam, forcing a Concordia timeout with 1:23 to play. The Stars then put the game on ice at the foul line, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 25 seconds.
For the Stars, senior Tim Robertson scored a team-high 21 points on 7-for-19 shooting. Robertson scored 17 in the second half to eclipse the 20-point mark for the fourth straight game.
Domenic Aiello added 15 points while Woolf and LaVere chipped in 13 and 12 respectively.
Antonio Amoah and
Isaac Moore both came off the bench to score ten points apiece.
For the Cougars, Pelissier finished with a game-high 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting. Jonathan Wilson added 17, going a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line.
The Stars hit the road on Saturday, traveling to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to take on the Marian University Sabres. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. at the Sabres' Sadoff Gymnasium.
