The Dominican University men's basketball fell 68-58 to the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks on Wednesday night at the Keating Sports Center in Chicago. The loss drops the Stars to 4-16 on the season while Illinois Tech improves to 16-4.
The Stars shot well early and led 19-13 midway through the first half before a 9-0 run for the Scarlet Hawks thrust the hosts into the lead. A late three in the first half put the hosts ahead 34-29 at the break.
Tim Robertson scored ten of his 14 in the first half on 5-for-8 shooting while
Isaac Moore and
Rory Cunningham added six points apiece off the bench in the opening half.
In the second, Tech pushed the lead to 11 on a couple of occasions before the Stars stormed back.
Jonny Woolf twice trimmed the lead down to three, including knocking down a three to draw the Stars within 59-56 with 4:39 to play. Two minutes later a reverse lay in for Woolf made the score 61-58 but the Scarlet Hawks scored the game's final eight points, including going 3-for-3 at the foul line in the final 68 seconds of regulation.
Robertson and Woolf shared team-high honors with 14 points apiece on a night the Stars shot better than 41-percent from the field. Moore finished with nine as the Stars' bench outscored the Illinois Tech bench, 19-13.
For the Scarlet Hawks, Jake Bruns, Max Histake and Jake DiGiorgio all scored 16 points while Malik Howze came off the bench, scoring 13 points in 34 minutes.
Illinois Tech shot better than 50-percent from the field, scoring 30 points in the paint, and controlled the glass, 39-22, including pulling down nine offensive rebounds that lead to 13 second chance points. Dominican did take better care of the basketball, turning the ball over just 11 times while forcing 18 turnovers which led to 23 points off turnovers.
The Stars return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action on Saturday, hosting the Marian University Sabres for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
