The Dominican University women's basketball team picked up a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) victory on Saturday, topping the Marian University Sabres, 64-52, to improve to 6-7 on the season and 2-6 in league play.
Â
Amari Stafford scored a team-high 15 points in the winning effort for Dominican and dished out seven assists as the sophomore played a role in 13 of Dominican's 26 field goals in the game.Â
Timiya Ray added 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds while freshman
Kelly Pezan chipped in a season-high nine points for the Stars.
Â
The Stars controlled the glass, winning the rebound battle 50-38, including pulling down 20 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second chance points.
Â
"I don't like to say anything is a MUST win, but we needed this victory today for morale and energy," commented Gabby Johnson, the Stars' head coach. "We'eve had a long stretch here and it feels good to get a NACC road win."
Â
"It was really nice to see Kelly get some positive minutes for us today," continued Johnson. "Nine points, three boards and an assist in eight minutes of action…that's what every kid off the bench should focus on."
Â
For the Sabres, Brandi Bender scored a game-high 19 points but Marian managed to shoot just 29-percent from the field, connecting on 17 of 57 field goals attempts.
Â
The Stars will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin, for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff against the Eagles.
