The Dominican Univeristy men's soccer team scored a 2-1 win over the Edgewood College Eagles in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament to advance to the conference semifinal match on Wednesday night at Aurora University.
Â
The Stars outshot the Eagles 15-8 in the contest, hanging on as the Eagles pushed forward over the final ten minutes, including scoring in the 86
th minute to cut the Stars' 2-0 lead in half.
Â
"We didn't get off to a great start today but we found more of our game as the first half went on," claimed Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach, following the win. "That was too much of an open game in the end, but this time of year is about advancing and we are moving on to the semis."
Â
After the sides battled for possession throughout much of the first twenty minutes, Dominican opened the scoring in the 26
th minute when an Edgewood handball in the box awarded the Stars a penalty kick. Junior
Isaac Perez buried the penalty, giving Dominican the early lead.
Â
Just 2:29 later, Perez again found the back of the goal for his ninth of the season, knocking in a rebound left in front of the goal after
Nicolo Vitale put a shot on frame, forcing Carson Hughes to make a diving save. The ball caromed right to Perez who was making a run at the back post for what proved to be the game-winner.
Â
The Eagles cut the lead in half in the 86
th when Kevin Garcia's long service from the right-back found Tyler Nelson's head for his third goal of the season.
Â
As can be expected in the playoffs, the sides combined for 31 fouls and seven cautions.
Â
Dominican held a marked advantage in corners, 9-1.
Â
The Stars, now 12-5-1 on the season, will travel to Aurora on Wednesday night, taking on the second-seeded Spartans with a spot in the NACC Tournament Championship on the line.
