The Dominican University women's basketball team, under the guidance of first-year head coach Amanda Parker, picked up a win in their season opener Thursday night, topping the Beloit College Buccaneers 62-52 on the road. In the winning effort, the Stars led wire-to-wire, leading by as many as 22 early in the fourth quarter.
"I am extremely proud to go on the road and get a big win over a very talented Beloit group," said Parker following the win. "As a team, we saw some spectacular things and some items we need to improve upon. I am really looking forward to all the growth we will make this year, both as individuals and collectively as a team."
Stephenee Huggans scored a game-high 17 points off the Stars' bench, shooting 3-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-3 from three, and converting on nine of 14 attempts from the foul line. The sophomore had a huge second half, scoring 14 points after halftime, including eight in the third quarter alone.
Leading by five, 31-26, with 6:50 to play in the third quarter, the Stars used a 15-0 run that spanned 1:30 of game time to open a 46-26 lead to effectively put the game out of reach.
Alexis Hoskins hit threes to open and cap the run, scoring nine points in a dominant third quarter for the Stars.
Hoskins finished the night with 14 on 4-for-9 shooting while
Timiya Ray added ten and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
As a team, Dominican shot 34-percent, 20-for-59, from the field, going 5-for-18 from three.
Shelby Kline paced the Buccaneers with 15 points on 4-for-16 shooting.
Dominican will host the Kalamazoo College Hornets on Saturday for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff for the Stars' home opener at the Igini Sports Forum.
