The Dominican University men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday evening, topping the Rockford University Regents 85-70 to move to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.
Isaac Moore led five in double-figures scoring for Dominican, pouring in a game-high 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting to lead the way.
"That was a good road win to start the conference season," commented Mark White, the Stars' head men's basketball coach. "The team had great energy and determination the whole game. I was most pleased that when Rockford made their run in the second half, we held tough and closed out the game, answering with a 24-10 run of our own."
 Â
The Stars and Regents traded leads throughout much of the first 15 minutes of play until
Dennis Handy put the Stars ahead 36-35 after Moore pulled down an offensive rebound. Rockford was able to even the score with a free throw on their next possession with the Stars taking a 43-40 lead into the break.
Â
Dominican opened its first double-digit lead, using a 16-6 run to open the second half, taking a 57-46 lead when Moore converted a lay in on the break with 15:07 to play.
Â
Rockford made a run of their own, chipping away at the lead over the next four minutes, eventually pulling within one, 61-60, with 10:50 to go.
Â
Handy and
Arrin Westbrook answered with threes on Dominican's next two possessions to quickly push the lead back to seven and sparking a 24-10 run for Dominican to close out the game.
Â
The Stars shot 15-for-34 from three in the game while the Regents managed to go just 6-for-15 from behind the three-point stripe. Dominican also got out and ran, holding a 21-7 advantage in fast break points.
Â
Connor Dartt,
Domenic Aiello,
Jackson Smith and Handy all joined Moore in double-figures while Westbrook finished with nine. Dartt chipped in 13 in 17 minutes while Aiello went 4-for-5 from three for 12 points. Smith and Handy finished with 11 and ten respectively.
Â
For the Regents, Kevin Diemer scored 13 points on 6-for-12 shooting while Taylor Krocker came off the bench to score 14 points in 18 minutes of work.
Â
The Stars will look to win their second straight on Wednesday, traveling to Illinois Tech to take on the Scarlet Hawks in conference action. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Keating Sports Center in Chicago.
