Game Recap: Baseball |

Stars Downed By Vikings

The Dominican University baseball team came up on the wrong side of a 4-1 game with the North Park University Vikings on Wednesday evening.  The Stars stranded 12 runners in the loss, six in scoring position, to fall to 1-2 on the season with the team's annual Spring Break Trip on deck.

The Stars got a quality start from freshman lefty George Sherman who lasted 6.1 innings in his first collegiate start.  Sherman was touched for three runs in the first before settling in and hanging zeros in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth before surrendering a solo home run in the seventh.  In total, Sherman was charged with four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one.

Dominican's lone tally came in the fifth inning when Colin Janison walked with the bases loaded after North Park hit a batter and walked JP Escamilla and Matt Segovia ahead of Janison.  Dominican then left the bases loaded when Frankie Sessa went down on strikes.

"I was really disappointed with our offensive approach, especially with runners in scoring position today," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' head coach. "I thought we got a quality start from Sherman and made some plays behind him, but we are struggling scoring guys right now.  We are doing a good job at getting runners into scoring position, but cannot take the next step of getting them in.  You will not win many games if you cannot get the big hit with runners in scoring position."

The Stars managed five hits, two for Segovia who went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.  However, Dominican hitters struck out ten times.

For the Vikings, Michael Pritts got the start and picked up the win on a bullpen day. Pritts allowed three hits over the first two innings while striking out two.  Josh Smith was the sixth pitcher of the game for the Vikings, picking up the final three outs, two by strikeouts, to pick up the save.

Dominican's trip to Fort Pierce, Florida, kicks off on Sunday with a doubleheader against Monmouth College.
