The Dominican University baseball team split a doubleheader with the Monmouth College Fighting Scots, taking game one 14-4 before dropping game two 6-5 on the first day of Stars' trip to Fort Pierce, Florida, for the Florida Coast Spring Training Tournament.
With the split, the Stars move to 2-3 on the season with six games remaining on the week-long trip. On Monday, Dominican will take on the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays at 2:00 p.m. ET at the Lawnwood Sports Complex.
Game One: Dominican 14, Monmouth 4
The Stars scored eight runs in the bottom of the second, opening a 9-1 lead after two innings. Monmouth pitchers hit the first four batters of the frame and six total in the inning, tying the NCAA Division III record for batters hit in an inning. With the Scots struggling to find the plate and a patient Dominican approach, the Stars drew three walks in the inning and needed just two hits, RBI singles by
Ryan Simak and
Frankie Sessa, to score the eight runs.
Colin Janison picked up the win on the mound for Dominican, improving to 1-1 on the season. The senior allowed just one run on three hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings.
At the plate, the Stars picked up six hits in the game, including two for Sessa who finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Janison,
Nick Roeper and
Nathaniel Natividad picked up two RBIs apiece.
For the Fighting Scots, Asa Stevenson was charged with the loss, lasting just 1.1 innings and surrendering nine runs on three hits, one walk and six hit batters.
Game Two: Monmouth 6, Dominican 5
Leading 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Stars looked poised to pick up the doubleheader sweep before the Fighting Scots pushed across five runs, all unearned, on three hits and a pair of Dominican errors.
Playing with the lead for the first time all day, Monmouth's Ryan Schulz set the Stars down in order in the sixth and then pitched around a two-out walk in the seventh to pick up the complete-game victory. Schulz was charged with five runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out three.
For the Stars,
Tyler Brown was charged with the loss on the mound despite not surrendering an earned run. Brown was tagged with six runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.2 innings of work.
Noah Loeffler then worked the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit.
Dominican opened the game with three runs in the top of the first, scoring on RBI singles by Sessa and
Alec Coggins before
Mike Buckley reached on an error, allowing Sessa to score.
After Monmouth got one run back in the bottom of the first, Dominican added to its lead in the fourth scoring a run on a single by
Joe Kukla before Janison was plunked with the bases loaded to force in
Roque Bruno.
Sessa had two more hits in game two, upping his season average to .455 and has hit safely in 11 straight games dating back to May 5, 2017.
