The Dominican University added to their best season in six years, topping the Edgewood College Eagles, 70-62, to improve to 12-10 on the season and 8-9 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) to keep the Stars' hopes alive for a conference tournament bid for the first time since 2012.
"Today's win came from a total team effort," commented Gabby Johnson, the Stars' head coach. "We had three kids with double-doubles, and two of those were close to triple doubles with Timiya [Ray] at seven blocks and seven steals for Alexis [Hoskins]. We are figuring out how to gut out some tough wins and will need all hands on deck on Saturday against a very well coached Concordia Wisconsin team."
Ray and Hoskins led four in double-figures scoring for Dominican with 15 points apiece. Hoskins did her damage on 7-for-13 shooting in 29 minutes, adding ten rebounds for her third double-double of the season while Ray rounded out her eighth double-double of the year with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Katie Uzoras added 11 points and ten rebounds while freshman
Alisha Markley dropped in 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting before fouling out after 37 minutes of play.
Trailing by three heading to the fourth quarter, Dominican scored the first six points of the period, including a lay in for
Stephenee Huggans that gave the Stars a 49-48 lead and the Stars would lead the rest of the way. Dominican shot 8-for-14 from the field, including a pair of threes, in the fourth quarter and sealed the game at the foul line, converting on seven of their ten trips to free throw line in the final period.
The Eagles shot just over 35-percent from the field in the loss, despite 20 points and 13 rebounds from Kelly Carpenter in 24 minutes off the Edgewood bench.
Dominican returns to action on Saturday, hosting the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons for a 4:15 p.m. tipoff at the Igini Sports Forum. Heading into the final three games of the regular season, the Stars sit in seventh place in the NACC standings, two games behind the Aurora University Spartans for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament.
