The Dominican University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Tuesday evening, rolling over the Penn State Brandywine Lions 10-0 in five innings before topping the Bates College Bobcats 7-2 in the Stars' nightcap. Dominican put all of its talents on display—pounding out 24 hits, including eight extra-base hits, while turning one double play in the field and surrendering just one earned run in the circle.
With the wins, the Stars improve to 5-1 on the season with an off-day scheduled for Wednesday before returning to the diamond on Thursday with games against Penn State University Behrend and Nebraska Wesleyan at Hancock Park in Clermont, Florida.
Game One: Dominican 10, PSU Brandywine 0 (5 Inn.)
The Stars broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, plating four runs on six hits. Starting pitcher
Cat Klostermann sparked the rally with a leadoff double and later scored on a single by
Marissa Burns.
Gabi Alfaro then plated a run before
Ali Woitovich knocked in another run with a single to center.
CJ Mardirosian promptly followed with an RBI single to left to give the Stars the 4-0 advantage.
After a scoreless fourth, the Stars' bats put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs on five hits and an error. After an RBI double by Alfaro, Woitovich deposited a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left for her first long ball of the season. A Lions' error kept the rally going with Klostermann later roping a bases-clearing double to center.
In the circle, Klostermann picked up the win, improving to 2-1 on the season. The sophomore right-hander worked four innings, surrendering just three hits while striking out six.
Woitovich was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI while
Julia Orozco, Mardirosian and Klostermann rapped out two hits apiece. In total, the Stars collected 13 hits.
Game Two: Dominican 7, Bates 2
The Stars bats picked up where they left off against Brandywine, striking for two runs in the bottom of the first. Orozco led off the frame with a double to center and later scored on a wild pitch. After a single by Alfaro, a pair of Bobcats' errors allowed Alfaro to come around to score, staking starting pitcher
Sydney Kuderna to a 2-0 lead.
After Bates got a run back in the top of the third, Dominican added two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Jacadi Rivera yanked a one-out single through the left side of the infield and later came around to score on a double down the left field line by Kuderna. After a passed ball,
Katie Fredrick brought home Kuderna with a sacrifice fly.
After a scoreless fourth, Woitovich led off the bottom of the fifth with a long solo shot over the fence in left, her second home run of the day. Later in the inning,
Cecilia Winters McCarthy brought in a pair of runs with a double to the gap in left-center, giving the Stars a 7-1 lead after 5.
In the top of the seventh, the Bobcats managed an unearned run but
Olivia Babusci got Caroline Bass to line out to third to end the game.
Kuderna improves to 2-0 in the circle, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over six innings.
At the plate, Dominican pounded out 11 more hits, including three at the top of the order for Orozco and two apiece for Winters McCarthy and Kuderna.
