The Dominican University men's soccer team closed out their preseason slate on Saturday evening, topping the Millikin University Big Blue 1-0 at the Stars' West Campus Field.
After nearly 65 minutes of scoreless play, Isaac Perez finished off the match's lone penalty kick attempt after a Millikin handball inside the 18-yard box. The tally was the first and only of the preseason for Perez who scored eight goals as a sophomore in 2017.
Three Dominican University goalkeepers—Daniel Dominguez, Brendon Martin and Hunter Faurbo—combined for the shutout, posting the second shutouts in three preseason games for the Stars.
"Playing three scrimmages in five days was a lot," said Erick Baumann, the Dominican head men's soccer coach, following the match, "but getting the opportunity to try new tactics and take a look at a good number of players out of their regular positions was very helpful with our continued assessment. Our preseason has gone very well on many levels and tonight's experiment was something we needed to see before we start the regular season."
Baumann continued, "It was also nice to get another shutout win. While these games don't count in our record, they do in establishing a winning mindset and culture. I'm looking forward to wrapping up preseason, getting a little rest and preparing for our home opener on Friday."
