Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stars Edged By Bluejays In Season Opener

The Dominican University women's soccer saw their bid for a second straight undefeated season come to an end, falling 2-1 to the Elmhurst College Bluejays in overtime in the season opener on Friday evening at Langhorst Field in Elmhurst, Illinois.

The Stars struck first, taking it to the Bluejays early and eventually finding the back of the goal in the 19th minute when #Josseline Williams# was sprung behind the Elmhurst backline by a beautiful volley from #Tania Paez# out near midfield.  The Stars' junior striker beat the Bluejays keeper for the early advantage.

Despite a few chances to add to their lead, the Stars could not break through again, eventually allowing Elmhurst to level the score in the 86th minute before the host Bluejays notched the golden goal in the final minute of the first overtime.

"We played really well for 84 minutes before giving up the tying goal," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head coach in his fifth season. "Credit Elmhurst for hanging tough…we had numerous chances to go up 2-0 but were unable to put the game away. We created some great opportunities but didn't finish. We'll learn from this and look forward to our next match on Monday in St. Louis against Webster."

"This was a good experience for our young team," continued Carrillo. "While I hate to lose, we started five freshman and four sophomores and have a lot of potential—a lot of room to grow."

The Stars outshot the Bluejays 13-9 with both sides putting five shots on frame.  Dominican's #Abbey Brown# was credited with three saves in the loss while Elmhurst's Sophia Tuliglowski tallied four saves.

Dominican will hit the road for St. Louis, traveling to Webster University for a noon match on Monday.
