The Dominican University men's soccer team suffered their first setback of the season on Wednesday night, coming up on the short side of a 1-0 decision with the North Central College Cardinals in Naperville, Illinois. The loss drops the Stars to 3-1-0 on the season with a matchup with the #12 North Park University Vikings on deck for Saturday in River Forest.
"We made a couple of mistakes in our defensive third on the goal against and those end up in the back of the net," commented Erick Baumann following the match. "This is now the second straight game we went down a goal and had to chase the scoreboard. You cannot sustain success doing that."
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Cardinals struck mere minutes into the second half when Gavin Sanchez finished off a long cross from Austin Lombardi. For Sanchez it was the first goal of the season and just the second goal surrendered by Dominican through four contests.
Dominican had some opportunities to level the score, including freshman
Jonathan Hernandez banging a shot off the post in the 67
th minute and putting two shots on frame in the second half, forcing North Central's Marco Soto to make a pair of saves.
In total, North Central outshot the Stars, 14-9, putting seven shots on frame to Dominican's three.
Daniel Dominguez made five saves in goal for the Stars but suffered the loss, falling to 3-1-0 while playing all 360 minutes in goal for Dominican on the season.
"I thought Dominguez really played well tonight in goal," said Baumann about his freshman goalkeeper.
