The Dominican University women's soccer team won its eighth straight contest on Wednesday afternoon, topping the MSOE Raiders, 2-0, at West Campus Field. With the win, the Stars improve to 8-2-0 on the season and an unblemished 3-0-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.
"We have played really well as a team throughout our eight-match winning streak and today was no different," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach in his fifth season. "Our backline was extremely organized and we didn't give them any chances. Then when we needed it, we got big plays by our playmakers in the attacking third."
Despite nine first half shots, it took until the 43
rd minute for Dominican to finally break through, scoring on a set piece when
Maggie McClure's corner service found the head of
Tania Paez for the senior's fifth goal of the season.
After the strong finish to the half, the Stars started the second half with a flurry, adding an insurance tally in the 47
th minute when
Josseline Williams struck from 19 yards out with a left-footed shot that was over the out-stretched hand of the keeper and just under the crossbar.
The Stars, dominating possession throughout, finished with a 13-3 advantage in shots, putting six on frame while allowing just one shot through to goalkeeper Abbey Brown who picked up her fifth shutout of the season, lowering her goals against average to 0.66 for the season.
Dominican will look to run its winning streak to nine on Saturday, traveling to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to meet the Lakeland University Muskies. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
