The Dominican University women's basketball team overcame a double-digit second half deficit, outscoring the Alverno College Inferno 22-11, to escape with a 60-55 win on Saturday night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Hannah Currant and
Alexis Hoskins paced the Stars with 15 and 13 points in the winning effort, but it was
Timiya Ray and
Stephenee Huggans that rounded out the comeback, combining to score 14 of Dominican's 22 fourth-quarter points.
"Tonight was very frustrating," said Amanda Parker, the Stars' first-year head coach. "Our overall play has to be more consistent. We cannot be a different team, quarter-by-quarter. Lucky for us, a few plays towards the end went our way. We have a huge week coming up and what we did tonight is not going to cut it. We need to improve in all facets of the game—and quickly."
Trailing by ten, 43-33, with 3:47 to play in the third quarter, Dominican went on a 22-5 run over a nine minute stretch to open a 55-48 lead with 4:33 to play. Ray and Huggans combined to score 11 straight at one point during the stretch, including a three by Ray that gave Dominican its first lead, 49-48, since leading 11-9 with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter.
After Ray's triple, Huggans closed the run with a pair of layups, giving the Stars their largest lead of the night, 55-48, with 4:33 remaining in the game. Alverno angled the lead all the way down to two on two occasions but Currant and Hoskins ensured the Inferno would get no closer. Currant's jumper with 1:08 to play put the Stars ahead 57-53 and Hoskins kept it a two-possession game when she buried two free throws in the final four seconds.
Currant was an efficient 7-for-13 from the field to lead the Stars in scoring for the second consecutive contest while Hoskins rounded out her fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds. Ray was limited to just two points through the first three quarters before scoring seven in the final period as Dominican rounded out the come-from-behind victory.
For the Inferno, Mackenzie Mathies scored a game-high 24 points in the losing effort. Justice Hawkins added 11 but the Inferno's duo was limited to just four in the fourth quarter as Alverno shot just 3-for-14, including 0-for-7 from three, over the game's final ten minutes.
Dominican, now 11-6 overall and 7-5 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, travel up to Mequon, Wisconsin, on Tuesday to face the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. With just eight games remaining in the 2018-19 season, the Stars sit in a tie for fifth-place in the NACC, trying to qualify for the conference's six-team tournament for the first time since 2012.
