Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced Effort Puts Stars Past Aurora

The Dominican University women's basketball team saw five players score in double-figures on Tuesday night in an 80-72 win over the Aurora University Spartans at Aurora's Thornton Gymnasium. With the win, the Stars improve to 8-5 on the season and pull back to .500, 4-4, in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).

"This was a huge road win for us," said Amanda Parker, the Stars' head women's basketball coach. "We put ourselves back in the mix of things. This was the first game this year where we truly played like a collective unit on both ends of the floor. I am extremely proud of all ten players and everyone's contribution to getting this victory."

After 11 lead changes through the first 11 minutes, the Stars used a 14-4 run, capped by an Alexis Hoskins three midway through the second quarter to open a 39-29 lead and then held the Spartans at bay the rest of the night.

Dominican held a marked advantage in points off of turnovers and second chance points but it was the Stars' 45 bench points that really shined in the win.  Timiya Ray, Samantha Wessel and Hoskins all came off the bench and reached double-figures in the winning effort.  Ray dropped in a team-high 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting while Wessel scored a season-high 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting in just 15 minutes of work.  Despite coming off the bench, Hoskins logged a team-high 34 minutes, adding 12 points, six rebounds and four steals.

As a team, the Stars shot 28-for-69, including 10-for-24 from three.  Amari Stafford helped erase an early 8-0 lead for the Spartans, dropping in three threes in the first quarter, finishing the night with 12 points.  Stephenee Huggans, making her sixth start of the season, finished with 11 points.  Both Huggans and Stafford finished with seven assists apiece as Dominican collected assists on 20 of its 28 field goals.

For the Spartans, Meija Rabi scored a game-high 32 points on 9-for-16 shooting.  The Spartans' 5'9 junior went 14-for-16 from the foul line and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.  Julie Galauner added 14 points for the Spartans while Bailie Edwards chipped in 12 on 5-for-7 shooting.

Dominican will have a quick turnaround, returning home to the Igini Sports Forum on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff against the Rockford University Regents.
