The Dominican University women's soccer team had to play from behind for just the second time in the last ten games, rallying for a 2-1 win over the Benedictine University Eagles on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field. With the win, the Stars run their record to 13-1-0 overall and a perfect 8-0-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.
"We were on them early, creating a number of good opportunities but could not score," said
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach. "As a coach you hope for the first one to come early as it can relax everyone and take a little pressure off. But when that doesn't happen you start to fear that one mistake and that is what happened today. I was glad we were able to regroup and continue to play with confidence."
After Dominican outshot the Eagles 12-0 over the opening 45 minutes with nothing to show, the Eagles capitalized on a counter in the 53
rd minute when Abbie Graham collected a loose ball near midfield, getting a couple of defenders to dive in to create a 1-v-1 breakaway with the Stars'
Abbey Brown. With Brown charging off her line, Graham put a low shot into the back of the goal for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for Benedictine.
Dominican finally cracked the scoreboard and leveled the score in the 61
st minute when
Hannah DiSilverio, just into the match five minutes earlier, played
Ashleigh Huerta into the 18-yard box on the right side before the speedster touched a pass for
Josseline Williams near the top of the box. Williams took a touch to the penalty spot before beating Cassidy Henson with a toe-poke to the near post.
The score remained 1-1 into the 87
th minute when the Stars took their first lead of the afternoon with
Denisse Avila netting the eventual game-winner.
Regan Coxon's throw into the Benedictine box was headed back out to the first-year standout. Coxon whipped a cross into the box where
Kayley Cruz settled it right to the left foot of Avila who beat Hanson to the near post.
Despite the tight 2-1 score, Dominican completely dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Eagles 24-2, putting 11 shots on goal to Benedictine's one. The Stars also earned 12 corner kicks while surrendering just one corner to their NACC foe.
The Stars will look to keep their momentum on Saturday, hosting the Edgewood College Eagles for a 2:45 p.m. kickoff in River Forest.
