The Dominican University women's soccer team ran their winning streak to 11 matches, topping the Edgewood College Eagles 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Stars' West Campus Field. With the win, the Stars improved to 14-1-0 overall and a perfect 9-0-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.
"I'm proud of the way we came out and played today," said
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach. "We are getting everyone's best game at this point but have been handling the pressure. We generated some early chances that we will need to start putting away as we get into the stretch run of the season, but we never let the pressure get to us. We have had a couple of lapses in defense this week and will need to clean that up as we move forward."
Â
The Stars completely dominated the match, controlling possession for more than 65-percent of the match and peppering Edgewood's Grace Wildeboer with 34 shots, putting 17 on frame. The Stars also earned eight corners while not surrendering a single corner to their NACC counterpart.
Â
Josseline Williams netted the eventual game-winner in the 33
rd minute of play when
Regan Coxon took on two defenders at the end line before finding Williams at the edge of the six-yard box. Williams spun to the middle before getting off a right-footed shot to the back post. The score was the 19
th of the season for the senior who now has 90 for her career.
Â
Wildeboer helped keep the Eagles close with seven first half saves before Dominican managed a pair of insurance tallies in the second half. Daniela Tovar-Mirada picked up a goal in the 52
nd minute when Wildeboer left a rebound after a Williams' blast before
Kayley Cruz capped the scoring, knocking in a loose ball after Williams created havoc in front of the Edgewood goal.
Â
Abbey Brown was forced to make one save, stopping Edgewood's Maddy Solder in the 60
th minute after the forward managed to get behind the Stars' back line near the top of the 18-yard box. The save preserved the shutout for Brown who now has four shutouts on the season to go along with a NACC-best 0.66 goals against average.
Â
The Stars will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting the Concordia University Chicago Cougars for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff at West Campus Field. The Stars then head to Mequon, Wisconsin, for a matchup next Saturday at Concordia Wisconsin before closing out the regular season at home on October 30
th, against the Aurora University Spartans.
