The Dominican University men's soccer team continued its trek through the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) on Saturday afternoon, cruising past the Edgewood College Eagles, 4-0, to improve to 12-2-2 overall and a perfect 8-0-0 in league play.
Â
"We got off to a nice start today," commented
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head men's soccer coach, "but seemed to lose focus and got sloppy as the game went on. We had a small handful of players give some quality minutes off the bench in the second half and we are going to need that as we get into the stretch run of the regular season and post season."
Â
Dominican's triple-threat up top of
Vicente Castro,
Isaac Perez and
Jonathan Hernandez proved to be more than a handful for the Eagles' back line. The talented trio combined for all four of Dominican's goals and collected three assists.
Â
Castro opened the game's scoring in the eighth minute when he was able to get on the end of a ball served to the back post by fellow freshman
Nick Kowalczyk. For Castro, the goal was the seventh of the season while the assist was the first of two on the afternoon for Kowalczyk.
Â
Just over three minutes later, Hernandez netted the first of his two goals in the match when the Stars strung together five passes, building up from their own end and finishing when Perez slid a ball through the 18-yard box to Hernandez who knocked it in at the back post.
Â
Less than four minutes later it was Perez's turn to get in on the scoring when Hernandez was sent into the box by center back
Nicolo Vitale. Hernandez found Castro make a run up the middle of the field and Castro then played Perez all alone on the left side before the senior finished with a blast with his left boot.
Â
Eighteen minutes would pass before Dominican's next goal with Hernandez getting on the end of a cross sent into the box by
Josh Prindle, heading home his 11
th goal of the season.
Â
Dominican continued to dominate possession throughout the remainder of the match, firing 22 shots while surrendering just three, none of which were put on frame by the Eagles.
Â
The Stars will return to action on Wednesday, hosting the Concordia University Chicago Cougars for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff at West Campus Field. Dominican then hits the road for the final two matches of the 2019 regular season, playing at Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday, October 26
th, before closing out the regular season with the Aurora University Spartans on Wednesday, October 30.
