The Dominican University men's soccer team improved to 13-2-2 on the season and remained perfect in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play (9-0-0) with a 4-0 win over the visiting Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field.
Â
"When we play the way we are capable of playing, we can be very good," commented
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head men's soccer coach in his 25
th season. "Unfortunately we didn't come out as sharp early but played much better in the second half, playing with purpose and intensity in our game. As we hit the final stretch of the regular season and start of postseason, we need to keep the switch on if we are going to accomplish our goals."
Â
Isaac Perez netted what proved to be the game-winner in just the 8
th minute of play before Dominican put the clamps on defensively and did not surrender a shot through the entire 90 minutes.
Â
Perez's tally, the 15
th of the season for the senior, was set up when
Vicente Castro won the second ball after service from the Dominican back line. Castro took on a few Cougar defenders before slipping a pass to Perez on the left side. Perez then beat the Cougars' keeper with a low, left-footed shot to the far post.
Â
The score remained 1-0 into the 71
st minute before the Stars' offense caught a spark, scoring three goals in a five minute span. The first came when
Jonathan Hernandez headed home a corner from Perez. Castro then got in on the scoring three minutes later, beating the Cougars' goalkeeper after
Nick Kowalczyk split three defenders before carrying to the endline and then slipping a pass for Castro near the penalty spot.Â
Quintin Eisner then capped the day's scoring, diving to drive a header into the goal off of service from
Garrett Boston.
Â
In total, the Stars outshot the Cougars 17-0, putting eight shots on frame including the four scores. Dominican also earned five corners while surrendering just one to their River Forest counterpart.
Â
The Stars hit the road for the final two matches of the regular season, taking on two of the top four teams in the NACC standings, including the Aurora University Spartans who currently sit tied atop the league standings with Dominican. On Saturday, Dominican travels to Mequon, Wisconsin, to take on the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons.
