The Dominican University women's soccer team saw their 12-match winning streak come to a close on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons 5-0 to fall to 15-2-0 on the season and 10-1-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play. The loss marks the end of a 33-match unbeaten streak in conference play, dating back to October 2016.
"When you face a quality opponent, you have to come out ready to compete," said
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach. "We did not come out to compete in the first half and dug ourselves a hole. In the second half we competed and created some good opportunities but came away empty. As we chased the scoreboard, we found ourselves on the wrong end of a counter and gave up the third goal. Though we created good opportunities hitting the post four times but could not find the back of the net."
The Falcons scored a pair of first half goals and then broke the game open in the 56
th minute, taking a 3-0 lead on a goal by Isabel Downs. Concordia Wisconsin added two more goals before it was all said and done, including Karoline Haugland's second goal of the match in the waning seconds of the match.
The Stars were outshot in the match 21-14 with shots on goal much tighter at 10-9. Dominican also had a slight advantage in corner kick opportunities, earning five corners to the Falcons' four but Concordia Wisconsin's Kaeley Sterkel made nine saves, posting the shutout victory.
"We have to better to start these type of matches if we want to accomplish our goals," continued Carrillo. "We cannot dig ourselves a hole. Good teams will not let you come back. We have been able to rally from slow starts a couple times because of our talent, but teams that can match our talent will make you pay as CUW did today."
The Stars will close out the regular season on Wednesday, hosting the Aurora University Spartans for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff at West Campus Field. Dominican needs a tie or a win to secure the NACC regular season title outright and earn the top seed in the 2019 NACC Women's Soccer Tournament.
"We look forward to getting back to work," claimed Carrillo, "and are excited for the challenges ahead. I am certain we will be ready."
