The Dominican University women's soccer team overcame a 2-0 deficit to secure the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) regular season championship and top seed in the 2019 NACC Tournament with a 3-2 win over the Aurora University Spartans on Thursday evening at Aurora's Spartan Athletics Complex.
Â
The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after just 25 minutes before the Stars managed to cut the deficit in half when
Josseline Williams found the back of the goal in the 29
th minute. Williams was sprung free after the Stars strung together a couple of nice passes, building from the back line at midfield.Â
Danielle Mason played outside back
Maggie McClure who played into
Hannah DiSilverio in the midfield. DiSilverio played a perfect through ball for Williams on the left side. Williams carried into the 18-yard box before slipping a shot inside the far post for her 21
st goal of the season.
Â
The Stars continued to trail 2-1 into the second half before
Regan Coxon scored the equalizer in 59
th minute, rising above a pack of players near the top of the six-yard box to head home corner kick service from
Daniela Tovar-Miranda.
Â
Playing with confidence and momentum after erasing the Spartans' early 2-0 lead, Dominican continued to press forward with Coxon eventually netting the game-winner in the final two minutes after Tovar-Miranda intercepted an errant Spartans' pass before playing Coxon near the top of the 18-yard box. Coxon took a touch to her left before sliding a shot for the back post. The score was the 21
st of the season for the Stars' freshman and her fourth game-winner.
Â
"Though we came out strong today," commented
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach, "we went down on the scoreboard quickly. We stayed strong and stayed the course, executing the game plan. I am very proud of this group and what we've been able to accomplish in the regular season. This team has heart and desire to compete for one another and they showed it tonight."
Â
"It is always great to win a conference regular season championship," continued Carrillo. "They don't ever come easy and to finish it off tonight in some difficult weather conditions on the road, is a remarkable accomplishment."
Â
After an even first half that saw both sides get off eight shots, Dominican dominated the run of play in the second half, outshooting the Spartans 9-1 over the final 45 minutes and putting five of those shots on frame. The Stars finished the night with a 17-9 advantage in shots, putting eight on goal while allowing just three on frame for the Spartans.
Â
The Stars, the number-one seed for the NACC Tournament which kicks off this Sunday, will sit idle this weekend through the tournament's quarterfinal round and will host the highest remaining seed in the semifinals on Wednesday at Dominican's West Campus Field. Kickoff in that contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
