Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stars Fend Off Raiders To Return To NACC Title Match

The Dominican University women's soccer team earned its seventh trip to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament Championship match with a 1-0 win over the MSOE Raiders on Wednesday afternoon at the Stars' West Campus Field.  With the win, the Stars improve to 17-2-0 overall and set a rematch with the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons who handed the Stars their lone loss in league play back on October 26th.

"This time of year is about finding ways to get results," said Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head coach, following his team's win. "We were not as good in the attacking third today as we will need to be Saturday. We have been much sharper this season than we were today. We will get back to work to find that chemistry we are going to need if we are going to be successful on Saturday. Defensively, I thought we did a nice job and we will need another organized and complete effort in the championship match."

The Stars scored the game's lone goal in the 49th minute of play when Josseline Williams got on the end of Kayley Cruz's service from the left flank, popping a header up and over the Raiders' Allison Lessilla after the keeper charged off her line.

"In the playoffs you are going to get the best from every team," said Williams following the match. "We were fortunate to get the win today and keep our season alive. We will take a day to recover and then get to work to prepare for Saturday."

Both teams generated an early chance in the first half with Abbey Brown stopping the Raiders' Caitie LeVasseur in the 13th minute when the freshman floated a shot from 30-yards out, trying to chip over the top of Brown.  Two minutes later, Williams was stopped by MSOE's Abbie Lorenz when the senior got off a left-footed shot from the top of the 18.

After the break, Brown went on to make four more stops, most on shots coming from outside the 18, to pick up her fifth shutout of the season.

The Stars were outshot in the contest for just the second time all season with the Raiders holding a 14-8 advantage in shots.  Shots on goal were much more even with MSOE holding a slight 5-4 advantage.  Dominican did have a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks opportunities.

"The postseason is about finding ways to get results," continued Carrillo.  "We did just that today and now we turn our attention to Saturday and try to game plan to get the result we need against a good Concordia Wisconsin team. We will have to be organized and pay attention to the details to come away with a result we need on Saturday."

Saturday's match is slated for 1:45 p.m. as part of a NACC Championship doubleheader at Dominican.  Dominican's men's team will host the Benedictine University Eagles in the men's championship.  Kickoff in that affair is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
