The Dominican University women's basketball team closed out a quick two-game swing to Memphis, Tennessee, with a 76-75 overtime win over the host Rhodes College Lynx. The win pushes the Stars to 3-0 on the season with Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play opening up next Saturday when Dominican plays host to the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons at the Igini Sports Forum.
Â
"Today was one of those games where we realized our true potential as a collective unit," said
Amanda Parker, the Stars' head coach in her second season. "I was thoroughly impressed with our focus and attention to detail, especially on the defensive end. To beat a really good team like Rhodes, gives us some confidence as we head into our conference season."
Â
The Stars trailed 69-66 with just 3.9 seconds remaining in regulation before
Amari Stafford buried a corner three as time expired to send the game to overtime. The three was the tenth of the game for Dominican who finished a season-best 12-for-31 from behind the three-point stripe.
Â
Dominican again found itself trailing in the overtime, taking their 12
th and final lead when
Nyema Burns cleaned up a
Stephenee Huggans miss on the offensive end with just over a minute to play. It was one of 11 offensive rebounds for the Stars in the game, finishing the afternoon with 15 second-chance points. Burns then helped seal the game with a block with 15 seconds to play.
Â
Huggans finished with a game-high 21 points on 7-for-16 shooting to lead four in double-figures for the Stars. Stafford finished with 16 while
Timiya Ray logged her second double-double in as many days with 13 points and ten boards. Ray's final bucket, a jumper with 4:16 to play in regulation, put the senior over 1,000-career point mark.

As a team, the Stars shot 25-for-71 from the field while the Lynx shot 25-for-66. Dominican did a tremendous job taking care of the basketball, turning the ball over just 13 times while forcing 22 turnovers leading to 19 points off of turnovers.
