Stars Outduel Highlanders

The Dominican University softball team came away with a walk-off win for the second game in a row, this time topping the Houghton College Highlanders, 2-1, in eight innings before dropping a 5-1 ballgame to the Penn State Hazelton Lions.

With the split, the Stars move to 2-2 on the season with Monmouth College and Roanoke College on the Stars' slate for Tuesday in Clermont, Florida.

Game One: Dominican 2, Houghton 1 (8 Inn.)

Allyson Dilday and Sydney Kuderna went pitch-for-pitch with Houghton's Kaylee Jentsch as neither team could manage a run through seven innings.

In the top of the eighth, with international tie-breaker rules in place, the Highlanders scratched across the ballgame's first run, capitalizing on a Dominican miscue in the field with two outs, before the Stars walked off with the win when Kuderna rolled a two-out double up the middle, scoring Alyssa Stuart and Gabby Curran.

Stuart, Sunday's hero, was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth and was sacrificed over to third by Megan Hufnagle.  After Curran worked a walk and stole second, Jentsch tried to escape, getting a strikeout before losing the battle to Kuderna.

Both teams managed five hits with Houghton stranding eight runners in the loss while Dominican left just five out on the base paths.

Dilday worked the first four innings for Dominican, working around three hits and three walks with six strikeouts.  Kuderna then came on for the final four innings, picking up the win while allowing just one unearned run on two hits.

Curran picked up two hits at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk while Dominican's three-four-five hitters, Kuderna, Hannah Gordon and Julia Orozco picked up one hit apiece.

Game Two: Penn State Hazelton 5, Dominican 1

The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Curran led off the game with a single and scored two outs later when Gordon singled to left.  However, the Stars' bats managed just two hits the rest of the afternoon while the Lady Lions scored five unanswered runs to knock off the Stars.

Cat Klostermann took the loss in the circle, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks while lasting just four hitters in the bottom of the first.  Kuderna came on for the next 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits before Libby Zoppa tossed 3.2 innings without surrendering a run.
