For the third day in a row on the Dominican University softball spring trip to Clermont, Florida, the Stars split a pair of games, topping the Monmouth College Fighting Scots 11-3 in five innings before falling to the Roanoke College Maroons, 9-3. The split pushes the Stars to 3-3 on the season heading into Wednesday's scheduled day off before returning to the diamonds in Clermont on Thursday, taking on Regis College and Emmanuel College.
Game One: Dominican 11, Monmouth 3 (5 Inn.)
Allyson Dilday picked up her first collegiate victory, improving to 1-0 on the year, tossing a complete-game in an 11-3 win over the Monmouth College Fighting Scots. Dilday allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four in her third start of the season.
The Stars staked Dilday to a four-run lead before she even took to the circle, pushing across four runs in the top of the first inning.
Gabby Curran led off the frame with a single to left and stood at third with two outs when an error allowed Curran to score and extended the inning for the Stars to tack on three more.
Julia Orozco added a run-scoring single later in the inning before
Cat Klostermann roped a two-run double to score Orozco and
Alyssa Stuart.
The Fighting Scots pushed across one run in the bottom of the inning and then pulled within a run with two more runs in the bottom of the second.
The Stars answered with two of their own in the top of the third and then broke the game open with a four-run fourth. Curran worked a walk to ignite the rally and later scored without the help of a hit, thanks to a pair of wild pitches and a sacrifice bunt.
Sydney Kuderna and
Hannah Gordon roped back-to-back doubles to make it 8-3 Stars before Klosterman added a sacrifice fly and
Maddie Sniegolski added an RBI single.
Curran then helped Dominican put the game out of reach, starting the top of the fifth with a double to center and later scored for the third time of the ballgame on another Monmouth error.
The Stars pounded out 11 hits in the win, two each for Curran, Gordon and Klostermann.
Game Two: Roanoke 9, Dominican 3
The Stars staked their pitchers to another early lead, this time executing a double steal with Curran and Gordon in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead after one inning.
After Roanoke got that run back in the top of the second, Klostermann put the Stars back in front with an RBI double, scoring Orozco who led off the frame with a double of her own. The RBI was the sixth of the day for Klostermann.
Roanoke roared back, scoring the next eight runs to pull in front, 9-2 before Dominican scratched across a run in the bottom of the seventh when Gordon bounced out to second with
Katie Fredrick at third.
In the circle, Klostermann took the loss for Dominican, falling to 1-2 on the season. The junior right-hander was charged with six runs on six hits in 4.1 innings for work.
