The Dominican University women's soccer team exacted some revenge on the Elmhurst College Bluejays on Friday afternoon at West Campus Field, topping the Bluejays 2-0, avenging the Stars' 2018 2-1 overtime loss to the Bluejays.
Â
The Stars knocked in the eventual game-winner in just the sixth minute of play when
Danielle Mason popped the ball into the box towards the back post after a Dominican corner where
Gabby Green was able to get on the end of it and knock it home for her first career tally.
Â
"It wasn't pretty but it was a good start for us," commented
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach. "The energy was there. We struggled a little bit to start but quickly got an opportunity and were able to go up 1-0."
Â
The teams traded possession throughout much of the match, with Dominican holding a slight 10-8 edge in shots and 51-49 percent advantage in possession but Dominican could not find its insurance tally until the 87
th minute courtesy of another restart. This time it was an Elmhurst foul just outside the top of the 18-yard box that set up the scoring opportunity. On the free kick,
Sammy Hatfield put a shot on frame. While Elmhurst's Sophia Tuliglowski made the initial save,
Leah Kostos crashed the goal, collecting the rebound before scoring through some traffic in front of the goal.
Â
"Set pieces are key," said Carrillo. "They can make the difference in a game and it showed today. We were able to capitalize on two of our set pieces."
Â
Facing eight shots, five of which were on frame, Dominican's
Abbey Brown picked up the shutout, making five saves. For the junior, it was her 28
th career shutout in just 39 career matches.
Â
Dominican, now 1-0-0 on the season, returns to the West Campus pitch on Sunday, hosting the Webster University for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff. The Stars will be looking to avenge another one of their three losses in 2018 on Sunday after the Gorloks edged the Stars 3-1 in St. Louis last September.
Â
"We get right back at it and get organized," continued Carrillo. "We are excited about the opportunity to play one of the teams that beat us last year. We are looking forward to it."
