The Dominican University women's soccer team improved to 2-0-0 on the 2019 season, smothering the Webster University Gorloks with high pressure in a 1-0 win for the Stars at West Campus Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Stars controlled possession throughout the match, keeping the ball in the Gorloks defensive end for much of the match with Dominican maintaining more than sixty percent of their possession in the attacking half of the field with Webster's possession mostly coming in their defensive third and midfield.
Â
The game was scoreless into the 20
th minute when
Abbey Brown's punt skipped off
Leah Kostos's head, springing Ashliegh Huerta behind the Gorlok backline and into the box where Huerta was taken down from behind, earning the Stars a penalty. Senior
Josseline Williams stepped to the penalty spot and buried the PK, beating Webster's Taryn Banfield for the game's lone tally.
Â
"It was fun to watch us come out and execute a game plan and play well for 90 minutes," said Stars' head coach
Carlos Carrillo. "Every player in every position focused on what responsibilities offensively and defensively. We are trying to use speed forward to create opportunities and Ashleigh did a great job doing just that for us."
Â
The Stars outshot the Gorloks 16-5, putting six on frame to the Gorlok's three. In fact, only two of the Gorlok's five shots came inside the 18-yard box while Dominican managed to get off eight shots inside the box.
Â
Brown picked up the shutout in goal, picking up three saves along the way.
Â
The Stars sit on their back-to-back wins for nearly ten days, returning to the West Campus pitch on Wednesday, September 11, when the Olivet College Comets visit Dominican for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff. Â
