The Dominican University women's soccer team showed little rust in their return to the game field on Wednesday afternoon, topping the Olivet College Comets 4-0 after a near ten-day break from game action. With the win, the Stars improve to 3-0-0 on the season, picking up their third straight shutout to open the 2019 season.
"Playing on a hot, humid day like today is tough," said
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach, "but our team managed and performed well. Everyone contributed to the win and for that I was proud. Though we could have been better at times, I was pleased with our effort. We will get back to work and continue our development—both individually and collectively."
The Stars opened the scoring in just the sixth minute of play when
Daniela Tovar-Miranda got service into the box from the right flank. The ball just missed the head of
Josseline Williams at the top of the six-yard but making a run just behind Williams was
Regan Coxon who was able to knock the ball into the goal for her first goal of the season and first of two on the day.
Minutes later, Coxon posed another challenge for the Comets when her long, dangerous throw bounced through the hands and over the head of Samantha Gifford where
Gabby Green was able to get a head on it and help the ball into the goal.
Dominican added another tally before the end of the first half, netting another goal thanks to a Coxon throw in the 36
th minute. This time, the throw resulted in a loose ball in front of the Olivet goal where
Jolie Meyers was able to pounce on it and score her first goal of the season.
Playing with the three goal advantage in the second half, Coxon decided to take the Stars' fourth goal by herself when she received the ball along the right sideline before dribbling her way into the 18-yard box, splitting a pair of defenders before beating Olivet's Mekenzie Lamb with a high shot to the near post.
Dominican finished the match with a 17-2 advantage in shots and nearly doubled the Comets in possession.
Abbey Brown and
Ashley Ishman split time in the Stars' goal for the combined shutout.
Dominican continues to navigate the 2019 slate on Saturday, traveling to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to take on the UW-Oshkosh Titans. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Stars then head to UW-Platteville on Tuesday before returning to West Campus on Saturday, September 21, hosting Albion in Dominican's homecoming 2019 game.
