The Dominican University men's soccer team put on a show for the home crowd on homecoming, topping the Millikin University Big Blue 3-0 at West Campus Field on Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Stars to 4-2-2 on the year and closes out the non-conference portion of the 2019 schedule with Dominican set to open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Wednesday, traveling to Chicago to face the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks.
"The guys played very well today and executed our game plan throughout the match," commented
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach. "Our quality in the final third of the field today and another clean sheet shows the progress we are making. It was especially nice to get a quality team win in front of our Homecoming crowd, including a good number alums of the program."
Dominican's
Isaac Perez scored the game's first goal on an impressive strike from 22-yards out. After
Vicente Castro let a pass off the foot of
Nicolo Vitale run through to Perez, the Stars' striker took two touches forward before curling a shot with his left foot for the upper-90 of the back post in the 12
th minute of play. The score was the first of two on the day for Perez, later adding an insurance tally in the 64
th minute to cap the day's scoring.
Before the first half expired, the Stars tacked on another goal when Jesus Perez found
Jonathan Hernandez just outside the six-yard box on a free kick and Hernandez flicked a shot inside the back post for the Stars' 2-0 advantage.
After Perez's insurance tally the second half, all that was left was for Dominican's back line to preserve the shutout and they did that in front of goalkeepers
Daniel Dominguez and
Hunter Faurbo who combined for the clean sheet.
The Stars outshot the Big Blue, 13-11, allowing just three shots to make their way onto frame towards Dominguez and Faurbo.
