The Dominican University men's soccer team opened Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Wednesday evening in Chicago, blanking the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks in a 1-0 win for the Stars. With the win, the Stars improve to 5-2-2 on the season, picking up their sixth shutout of the season and fourth straight clean sheet.
"Our overall game wasn't as clean as it has been," commented Dominican's
Erick Baumann, the Stars' head men's soccer coach, "but the guys competed hard to earn another shutout win. We are doing a nice job of generating quality chances in the final third and playing good, organized team defense."
Sophomore
Jonathan Hernandez scored the game's lone goal, finding the back of the goal in the 21
st minute of play. Dominican managed a counter after an Illinois Tech corner kick.
Vicente Castro carried up the middle of the field before slipping a pass for Hernandez on the left. The Stars' leading goal scorer saw his first shot blocked before he muscled his way through traffic to the center of the top of the 18-yard box before getting off a right-footed shot that was perfectly placed inside the right, upper-90.
The Stars more than doubled-up the Scarlet Hawks in shots, 13-6, and put four shots on goal to Illinois Tech's two.
Daniel Dominguez logged two saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the season.
The Stars return to action on Saturday, traveling to Milwaukee to meet the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in NACC play. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
