The Dominican University women's soccer team cruised to its fifth win of the season, rolling over the Albion College Britons, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Stars' West Campus Field. With the win, Dominican improves to 5-1-0 on the season with Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play opening this week. The Stars will travel to Rockford on Tuesday to take on the Rockford University Regents before returning to the West Campus turf on Wednesday for a rematch of the 2018 NACC Tournament Championship match against the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks.
"This was a great way for us to close out the non-conference portion of our schedule," said
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach. "We played with energy and intensity and were relentless in our pressure on Albion today. We scored a couple of nice goals off of set pieces and then a great individual effort and shot from
Josseline Williams to put the game away late."
The Stars allowed Albion just two shots in picking up their fifth shutout of the season.
Abbey Brown and
Ashley Ishman split time in goal, neither having to make a save in securing the combined clean sheet.
It took the Stars 35 minutes to finally crack the scoreboard despite dominating possession.
Maggie McClure was able to get on the end of
Sammy Hatfield's corner kick service. After Hatfield's service found its way to the middle of the Albion goalmouth, McClure was able to make a run at it and knock it in for the eventual game-winner.
The score stayed 1-0 into the 55
th minute when another restart for Dominican ended up in the back of the goal. This time, an Albion foul created the opportunity and
Regan Coxon and McClure made the Britons' pay. This time McClure provided the restart service, serving for the back post where Coxon got a head on the cross, knocking in her third goal of the season.
Dominican's leading goal scorer later got in on the action, putting a bow on the 3-0 win in the final 50 seconds when she scored an incredible goal, hitting a rocket with her right foot after trying to create space to her left. The score was the fourth of the season for Williams and 75
th of her career.
The win closes out the Stars' non-conference slate, with 12 NACC matches standing between the Stars and a repeat to capture the NACC crown.
