The Dominican University women's soccer team dominated the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks on the stat sheet Wednesday afternoon at Dominican's West Campus Field, but the Stars found the back of the goal just once, grinding out a 1-0 win. The win pushes the Stars to 7-1-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.
"That was a great team win," said
Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head women's soccer coach. "It's always nice to get a conference win, especially in a rematch of last year's conference tournament match. Though we dominated the game on the stat sheet, we had to grind out that win which speaks to our team character. They came in with a game plan, executed it and fortunately we were able to finish one of our opportunities."
The Stars outshot the visiting Scarlet Hawks, 15-2, putting six shots on frame but could not find the back of the goal until the 66
th minute when
Danielle Mason was able to head home
Daniela Tovar-Miranda's corner kick service. The Stars' restart was generated when
Ashleigh Huerta managed to gain the endline with her speed, earning the Stars one of their nine corner kicks on the afternoon.
Ashley Ishman and
Abbey Brown combined for the shutout in goal for Dominican. Brown came up huge in the final moments, making a pair of saves in the final two minutes of regular time. The second save was a diving save on Illinois Tech's Jamie Griggs, the 2018 NACC Freshman of the Year and Scarlet Hawks' leading goal scorer.
Dominican continues to navigate the NACC league play on Saturday, traveling to Milwaukee to square off against the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
