The Dominican University women's basketball team came up just short in its bid to upset the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) leading Benedictine University Eagles, falling 49-44 at the Igini Sports Forum on Saturday afternoon to snap a seven-game winning streak for the Stars. The loss drops Dominican to 12-5 overall and 8-4 in league play with a return to the hardwood slated for Tuesday when the Stars travel to Mequon, Wisconsin, for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff against the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons.
The Eagles led by as many as 13 in the second quarter, but the Stars clawed all the way back, eventually evening the score, 41-41, when
Timiya Ray drove down the lane before dropping a pass to the right block for
Hannah Currant and the sophomore finished through contact from Benedictine's Alex Fanning. The bucket capped an 8-0 run for the Stars that spanned the final 40 seconds of the third quarter and first 3:14 of the fourth.
Benedictine came down and knocked down a three on their next possession before Ray then leveled the score at 44-44 when she knocked down a three with just over three minutes to play.
Both offenses came up empty for the next 1:16 until Britney Pitzer put the Eagles back in front with a three with 1:35 to play. The bucket was one of just two field goals for Benedictine in the fourth quarter.
Dominican had three looks to try and tie the game but both Ray and
Alexis Hoskins had potential game-tying threes rim out in the final 75 seconds of the game before Pitzer converted a pair of free throws in the final two seconds.
Ray and Hoskins both collected double-doubles in the losing effort for Dominican. Ray finished with a game-high 19 points and added 11 boards while Hoskins posted 13 points and 13 rebounds.
For the Eagles, Allison Michalski and Pitzer finished with 14 points apiece. Michalski added 12 rebounds.
Both teams hit at a 25-percent clip from the field with the difference coming at the foul line. Benedictine converted on 11 of 15 attempts from the charity stripe while the Stars finished just 1-for-9 at the free throw line.
