The Dominican University women's basketball team scored their first win over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in program history, knocking off the perennial Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) power, 78-61, at the Igini Sports Forum on Tuesday night. In the process, the Stars'
Timiya Ray surpassed Jessica Salinas for the top spot on the Dominican University NCAA-era (2000-present) all-time scoring list with 1,276 points.
"I am so incredibly proud of T for achieving such a high honor," said
Amanda Parker, the Stars' head women's basketball coach. "She has put in so much time to master her craft and it is truly paying off."
After a back-and-forth first half, Ray's scoop layup in the final 15 seconds of the first half, capped a quick 6-0 spurt for the Stars, extending the Dominican lead to 43-36 at half, and pushed the senior atop the Dominican all-time scoring list since the university transitioned to the NCAA Division III ranks in 2000.
After the break, Dominican continued to build upon its lead, pushing the lead to 13, 58-45, when
Alisha Markley found Ray under the basket for an easy lay in after a pump fake.
After a quick 5-0 run for the Warriors,
Hannah Currant pushed the lead back to double-digits, 60-50, with a bank shot from the block.
The Warriors would use a 7-0 run midway through the quarter to cut the Stars' lead down to five, 66-61, with 3:31 to play, but the Stars put the clamps down on the defensive end of the floor, holding the visitors scoreless over the game's final three and a half minutes while going on a 12-0 run to close the game and secure their first win over the Warriors in program history.
"We put together four solid quarters and executed the game plan, almost to perfection," continued Parker. "The crowd was amazing and they definitely helped us get this win tonight. It was a huge win for our program and I am extremely proud of everyone."
Ray finished with a game-high 23 points on 9-for-17 shooting and going a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line.
Alexis Hoskins and
Amari Stafford added 13 points apiece while Currant scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to round out four in double-figure scoring for Dominican.
For the Warriors, Kelly Tramburg led four in double-figures with a team-high 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting while Jenna Mace finished with 12.
Dominican, now 16-7 on the season and 12-6 in the NACC, returns to action on Saturday, taking the short trek down Division Street to take on the Concordia University Chicago Cougars. The Stars then close out the 2019-20 regular season on Wednesday, February 19, with the Marian University Sabres visit the Igini Sports Forum.
