The Dominican University men's volleyball team made quick work of their River Forest rivals on Tuesday night at the Igini Sports Forum, needing just 59 minutes to sweep through the Concordia University Chicago Cougars, 25-18, 25-21, 25-12, to remain unbeaten on the season at 8-0 and improve to 3-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). The Stars went 15 players deep in the win, managing to hit at a .388 clip behind setter
Jack McGuire who doled out 29 assists while using ten different hitters.
Â
"It was great to pull out another three set win," commented
Doug Burchette, the Stars' long-time men's volleyball assistant coach, "this time against a solid opponent in a rivalry game. We didn't always play at our highest level that we are capable of, but we still took care of business. We are looking forward to our next challenge in number 15 Benedictine this weekend. We will get back in the gym and get back to work tomorrow."
Â
The Stars started fast in each of the three sets, opening an 8-3 lead in the first, 7-2 lead in the second and 8-2 in the third and never looked back.
Â
Jake Sidner knocked down a team-high six kills while playing in just the first two sets while Tory Kates collected five kills on just six swings all night. Sophomore
Daniel Sharrah had a monster third set for the Stars, tallying five kills on six swings as the Stars put the game to bed.
Â
Defensively, the Stars forced the Cougars into a .120 attack percentage, collecting 31 digs in the back row and posting seven total blocks at the net. McGuire, Kates and
George Kougan all picked up three block assists while
Patrick Bradford tallied two assisted and one solo block.
Â
Dominican, ranked seventh in Tuesday's AVCA Men's Division III Top 15 Poll, will look to push its season-opening win streak to eight matches on Saturday, traveling to Lisle, Illinois, to meet the Benedictine University Eagles, who reentered the poll today at 15. The match is slated to start at noon at Benedictine's Dan and Ada Rice Center.
