The Dominican University softball team picked up a pair of shutout victories at the College Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, on Tuesday morning to move to 5-5 on the season and 4-2 on the Stars' spring trip to Florida. In game one,
Cat Klostermann was nearly perfect, facing one over the minimum, in a one-hit 8-0 win over the Penn State New Kensington Nittany Lions.
Allyson Dilday then went the distance in a complete-game, 1-0, win over the Becker College Hawks in game two.
The Stars will return to the diamond on Wednesday, Emmanuel College and University of Mount Union at Hancock Athletic Complex at 9:00 a.m. ET and 11:15 a.m. ET respectively. The Stars will then take an off-day on Thursday before closing out the trip with a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
Game One: Dominican 8, Penn State New Kensington 0 (5 Inn.)
Klostermann faced the minimum through three innings before giving up a one-out single in the top of the fourth. The hit was the lone runner that would reach base for the Nittany Lions as Klostermann whiffed ten hitters and walked none in a one-hit effort. With the win, Klostermann improves to 1-3 on the year.
The Stars bats broke out to the tune of nine hits.
Lavin Catrambone picked up two hits, including a run-scoring single in the first and another in the second.
Makayla Barnes logged a three-run triple ahead of Catrambone's second hit of the day in the second as the Stars broke the game open early, leading 5-0 after two innings and then coasting to the 8-0 win.
Game Two: Dominican 1, Becker 0
Dilday was nearly as effective in game two as Klostermann was in game one, allowing just five hitters—one walk, two hits and two errors—to reach while striking out four in a 1-0 win over the Becker College Hawks.
Despite seven hits for the Dominican offense, the Stars stranded seven runners, only managing to plate Barnes in the top of the third after the freshman drew a two-out walk for the game's lone run. Barnes was able to come home on a
Megan Hufnagle single after stealing second.
Delaney McRiley and
Alyssa Stuart logged two hits apiece for the Stars in the winning effort.
