Stars Rally For Split On Day 2

The Dominican University softball team recovered from a 7-6 loss to the D'Youville College Spartans in game one on Sunday with a 5-1 win over the College of St. Scholastica Saints to move to 3-5 on the season and 2-2 through the first leg of the Stars' spring trip to Clermont, Florida.  Dominican will enjoy an off day on Monday before returning to the diamonds on Tuesday with games against Penn State New Kensington and Becker College at 9:00 a.m. ET and 11:15 a.m. ET respectively.

"We came out hitting in game one but didn't continue adding to our lead," said Cristina Lukas, the Stars' head softball coach. "D'Youville kept chipping away at our lead and eventually caught the break they needed to come back and win. In game two, Cat Klostermann was in top form, scattering seven hits while picking up seven strikeouts. Hannah Gordon and Zoe Deeringer both picked up big hits, driving in two runs apiece."

"Things are starting to come together," continued Lukas. "We are doing some things progressively better as the week goes on. We need to take the momentum into Tuesday and finish the week strong."

Game One: D'Youville 7, Dominican 6

The Stars rallied for six runs in the top of the third, opening a 6-1 lead after three innings.  Kellie Fabbri opened the inning with an infield single.  The Stars then put runners at second and third after an error and stolen base.  Two more Spartans' errors sandwiched around a walk helped the Stars to their first three runs before Lavin Catrambone drove in a run with a single down the right field line.  Up for the second time in the inning, Fabbri plated a pair with a single to right to round out the inning.

The Spartans scratched across a run in the bottom of the third with a leadoff walk ahead of a two-out, RBI single by Madisyn Pepke.

After a four-run bottom of the fifth pulled D'Youville within a run, the Spartans then scratched across the tying run and the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.  Back-to-back singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases before Klostermann got the first out of the inning on a swinging strikeout.  The Spartans evened the game with a single to center and then walked off when Jackie Langer scored on a wild pitch.

The Stars managed seven hits in the loss, three for Fabbri.

Klostermann took the loss, coming on in relief of Allyson Dilday who got the start in the circle. Dilday lasted five innings, surrendering five runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks while striking out three.  Working the last 1.1 innings, Klostermann allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Game Two: Dominican 5, St. Scholastica 1

The Stars picked up their second win over the Saints in the last seven days, this time behind a solid start from Klostermann who improved to 1-3 on the season with a complete-game victory. The Saints managed just seven hits and two walks off the Stars' right-hander who picked up seven strikeouts along the way.

Offensively, the Stars managed seven hits, two for Makayla Barnes while Gordon and Deeringer drove in two runs apiece with two run singles in the second and sixth innings respectively.  Alyssa Stuart drove in the Stars other run with a single in the sixth, scoring Catrambone.
