#6 Dominican Sweeps Loras in Opener

River Forest, IL – The #6 Dominican University men's volleyball team rolled in straight sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-18) for a season-opening win over Loras College on Thursday night.

An Adrian Cebula kill gave the Stars a 7-6 lead in the opening set before the Duhawks pulled to within one, 11-10, thanks to a pair of Dominican errors. The home team responded with an 8-1 run to open the margin to eight at 19-11. Kills by Troy Kates, Jack McGuire, and George Kougan closed out the first set 25-15 in the Stars' favor.

Dominican jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the second set after back-to-back service aces by Mat Molloy. A mini 4-0 rally, which included two service aces from Kougan, pushed the cushion to 11-4. The Stars ballooned the margin to 10, 16-6 after McGuire set up Molloy to cap off another 4-0 spurt. Loras cut the deficit to seven, 17-10 but Dominican answered with kills from Cebula and Kougan to expand the advantage back to 10, 20-10. Trey Cowan cemented the set with a pair of service aces, as the Stars recorded six in the set, for a 25-14 win.

The Duhawks did not go quietly though as a kill made it a 10-9 Stars lead early in the third set. A Cebula service ace opened some breathing room at 13-9 before Loras rallied with three straight points to trim the margin back to one, 13-12. Another service ace from Molloy, extended the edge to four, 16-12, but again Loras would hang around with the differential just three at 19-16. A kill by McGuire paired with consecutive attack errors by the Duhawks increased the lead to 22-16 in favor of the Stars before back-to-back kills by Molloy and Kougan closed out the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Cebula and Kougan paced a diverse Dominican attack with eight kills apiece while the former led the team with a .583 hitting percentage. McGuire directed the attack, racking up 24 assists while Kates registered five blocks on the defensive end.

The Stars have a quick turnaround as they welcome Augustana College to the Igini Sports Forum on Saturday, February 13th for a 2:00 p.m. first serve.
