#6 Stars Win Tight Third Set, Sweep Vikings

River Forest, IL – The #6 ranked Dominican University men's volleyball team cruised in the first two sets before prevailing in a tightly contested third, to sweep Augustana (25-16, 25-18, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon.

A service ace by Trey Cowan knotted the score at 9-9 early in the first set before a pair of Viking attack errors put the Stars ahead 14-11. Another ace, this time by George Kougan, pushed the score to 19-15 before he closed out the set with a kill to give Dominican a 25-16 win.

An Adrian Cebula kill gave the Stars a 6-3 edge early in the second before Jack McGuire found Mat Molloy to double up the Vikings 10-5. Augustana trimmed the deficit to 14-12 but Dominican rallied for four of the next five points, capped off by a McGuire service ace to build a five-point cushion at 18-13. Three straight attack errors by the Vikings gave the Stars some breathing room at 22-15 as Cowan finished the set with a kill for a 25-18 victory.

A McGuire kill put Dominican ahead 10-7 in the third set before another kill from Cebula made it a 16-13 advantage. Augustana responded to knot the score at 20-20 but a Kougan kill and Viking attack errors put the Stars ahead 22-20. The visitors scored the next point but more errors plagued the Vikings before a Molloy kill closed out the set 25-22 for the match sweep.

"It's always great to start a season 2-0," said Head Coach Cameron Andrew. "Augie was a great test going into our first NACC matchup. Offensively we did some great things today. I want to see us improve on the defensive side going into practice Monday. We allowed too many silly errors to happen on our side of the floor."

Kougan led the offensive attack with 13 kills while McGuire notched 32 assists. On the defensive end, Bregin DeMarco had six digs while Cebula and Molloy had three blocks each.

"We aren't satisfied with our defense, and we've won in straight sets both times,'" added Andrew. "I think that speaks volumes to how good this team can actually be."

The Stars return to action when they head to MSOE on Tuesday, February 16th for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
