Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stars Force Overtime, Defeat Blueboys 88-85

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University men's basketball team held a double-digit halftime lead but had to force overtime where they prevailed for a 88-85 win over Illinois College on Friday night inside the Igini Sports Forum.

Jackson Smith scored a game-high 36 points on 10-of-19 shooting including going 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. Dylan Anderson poured in 19 (7-of-15) to go along with eight boards while Luke McDermott had a season-high 17 points, going 6-of-7 from the field.

A made three by the Blueboys gave them a 22-15 lead halfway through the opening stanza but the Stars responded with a 16-2 run to go up 31-23 with 6:06 remaining until halftime.

A John Duszynski triple held the differential at nine, 36-27, with 3:16 left to go as Dominican made its free throws to lead 44-31 at the break.

Illinois College used a 16-6 spurt to pull within three, 50-47, just over four minutes into the second half before a make from long distance gave the visitors a 55-54 advantage at the 12:32 mark of the session.
The Blueboys extended the margin to seven, 63-56, with 8:16 on the clock before Andre Hughes capped off a 12-5 run to knot the score at 68-68.

The Stars trailed by five, 73-68, with a minute remaining in the half before back-to-back triples by Smith, the latter with 21 seconds remaining, sent the game to overtime tied at 74-74.

An Anderson make from long range started off the extra session before a pair of free throws from McDermott gave Dominican a slight 79-76 lead. On the next trip down the floor, McDermott hit from deep followed quickly by an Anderson dagger to push the Stars ahead 85-79 at the 1:53 mark of overtime. A pair of Hughes free throws made it a three-point game, 88-85, with 16 seconds remaining, and a contested three-pointer from the top of the key clanked off the iron as Dominican held on for the victory.

"I thought that we had a good week of practice and have been improving," said Head Coach Mark White. "We definitely ran a better offense today and had some key defensive stops when we needed it."

The Stars lit it up from three-point land, making 14-of-30 (46.7%) attempts while also making 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the charity stripe to lead themselves to the win.

Dominican returns to NACC play when it welcomes Rockford to the Igini Sports Forum for a pair of games next weekend, starting on Friday, February 19th at 5:00 p.m.
