Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stars Lose in Closing Seconds to Regents

River Forest, IL – The Dominican University men's basketball team fought back from a halftime deficit to take a 65-64 lead with 8:13 to go in the game but they were unable to hold off the Regents who won an 83-82 nail biter on Friday night.

Jackson Smith was once again the game-high scorer for the Stars, netting 35 points on an impressive 12-of-21 shooting. Luke McDermott and KJ Redfield added 14 and 10 points respectively for the royal blue and white.

A Smith three-pointer pulled Dominican to within two, 18-16, seven minutes into the contest but Rockford stretched its advantage to 11, 38-27, with 7:11 left in the opening stanza.

A McDermott make from long distance cut the deficit to seven, with just under two minutes to go until the half but a late layup by the Regents gave the visitors a 47-38 lead at the break.

Dominican began to chip away at the deficit early in the second half as a three-point play from Smith made it a three-point game, 49-46, two minutes into the half.

Gavin Richardson tied the score up for the first time since it was 7-7 with a fast break layup halfway through the session before a pair of free throws from Smith gave the Stars their first lead of the game, 66-64, since it was 4-3.

A made jumper by Rockford gave them a 71-66 edge but another triple from Smith, his third of the evening, regained the lead for Dominican, 78-77 with 2:07 to go.

Back-to-back layups by Kevin Diemer, the current back-to-back player of the week in the South Division, put the Regents ahead 81-78 but Redfield responded with a three-pointer of his own to knot the score at 81-81 with 1:11 remaining.

Dylan Anderson made one of two free throws on the next trip down the court to give Dominican a one-point lead with 32 seconds remaining but Rockford went back to Diemer for a clutch basket with 13 seconds left.

After a Stars timeout, the offensive got the look it wanted but a corner three didn't go for the home team as they lost close one 83-82.

Coach Mark White appreciatess the comeback effort of his team but believes it's digging itself a hole too early. "Most of the season we have not played with an urgency in the first half. We don't bring enough intensity on the defensive end of the floor and then don't value possessions enough on the offensive end."

Dominican's defensive allowed Rockford to shoot 48.5% in the first half which included a 7-of-13 mark from three-point land.

"Once we dig ourselves a hole we run a better offense and play much harder on the defensive end," continued Coach White. "You can't always be chasing a deficit and having to rely on one defensive stop or one-shot to win a game. We'll figure it out and the nice thing is we get to play again tomorrow night."

The Stars will look to split the season series at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow inside the Igini Sports Forum.
