Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

#6 Dominican Cruises to Straight Sets Win

River Forest, IL – It was a tough first match of the season for Rockford University as the #6 Dominican men's volleyball team was too good, winning in straight sets (25-13, 25-22, 25-10).

The Stars jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead after a Mat Molloy service ace and the score held at a firm eight-point advantage after Jack McGuire's ace made it 15-7. A kill by Lucas Eggers pushed the margin to double digits at 21-10 before back-to-back Rockford errors closed out the first set 25-13 in Dominican's favor.

The second set was a different story as the Regents came out energized, taking an early 8-5 lead. A McGuire service ace regained the lead for the Stars, 10-9, but a 6-1 run by the Regents gave the visitors a 16-13 advantage around the halfway point of the set. Dominican responded with a 4-1 spurt, capped off by an Adrian Cebula kill, to knot the score at 17-17. The set still hung in the balance as Rockford held a slim 20-19 lead but Dominican rattled off six of the last eight points to take the second set 25-22.

The Stars ran away with the final set as they rushed out to a 12-3 led which ballooned to a 17-4 mark after freshman Miles Duncan registered his first collegiate kill. Kyle Eggers joined in on the freshman fun with a kill of his own to make it 19-7 before a pair of Rockford attack errors ended the set in Dominican's favor, 25-10.

With the Stars running away with the third set, Coach Cameron Andrew was able to insert some other freshman as Tyler Hudson and Calvin Hertel saw their first action for the royal blue and white.

"It was great to get everyone a little bit of experience," said Coach Andrew. "I loved to see the individual contributions we got from players who had yet to see the court time to this point. We know we are going to need to use our depth this year and our middies showed that tonight."

To that point, Cebula led a diversified offensive attack with six kills and six digs as McGuire registered 21 assists.

"This team has set high goals for themselves and starting 1-0 in the NACC is a step in the right direction," continued Coach Andrew. "We didn't execute perfectly tonight by any means, but we did some great things, especially as blockers (team recorded 19 total blocks) and at the service line (10 aces). Now we look to keep it rolling in NACC play next week."

The #6 Stars will hit the road for a pair of matches next week, first on Tuesday, February 23rd at Illinois Tech before a Thursday match against Benedictine. Both contests are slated for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
