Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Second Half Propels Stars to Win

River Forest, IL – It was all Stars in the second half as the Dominican University women's basketball team erased a slim 32-29 deficit at the half to win 67-55 on Friday night.

Alisha Markley had a game-high 17 points off the bench on 6-of-12 shooting as freshman Kamryn Woods added 13 points and six boards. Currant chipped in six rebounds as well to go along with 12 points to round out the Dominican trio in double figures.

It was a close opening quarter as a pair of free throws by Markley with nine seconds remaining in the opening stanza gave Dominican a 16-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.

A Woods layup extended the lead to six, 20-14, but Rockford would tie the score at 24-24 halfway through the frame. Woods would retake the lead for Dominican, 28-26, with another layup but the Regents closed the half strong, as a bucket with three seconds left gave the home team a slight 32-29 advantage at the break.

The game started to shift in Dominican's favor in the third quarter as a Stephenee Huggans' three started a 10-3 run to begin the half which gave the Stars some breathing room at 39-34. A Markley make from long-range stretched the advantage to double digits, 47-36, as the Stars outscored the Regents 18-7 in the quarter to lead 47-39 after three.

A layup from Currant extended the margin to double digits, 57-46, three minutes into the final quarter before an Alyssa Fahner layup gave Dominican its biggest lead of the night, 65-48, with 3:12 to go in the game.

Rockford was unable to trim the deficit to single digits in the final minutes as a 20-point quarter by Dominican propelled them to a 67-55 win.

What changed the game was the Stars' second-half defense as they held the Regents to just 19.4% shooting from the field (7-of-36) in the second half.

First-year Head Coach Antonio Rivas earned his first career collegiate win tonight and was thankful to be on the court again. "I was extremely grateful to coach this group on the court after the long layoff," said Coach Rivas. "We didn't play well in the first half however, I am pleased with the adjustments we made defensively and the execution of our offense in the second half. It was a great team win as everyone contributed."

To that point, the bench was a strength for Dominican as it outscored Rockford's 29-18 with 10 different players recording points for the Stars.

Dominican will look to sweep the season series tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.
