Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Comeback Bid Falls Short at Benedictine

Lisle, IL – The Dominican University men's basketball team hung around for most of the night, cutting the deficit to 82-74 with just over three minutes left to play before falling to Benedictine 92-79 on Friday evening.

Jackson Smith scored a game-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with seven assists and six rebounds. Dylan Anderson recorded his first double-double of the season, pouring in 14 with 13 boards while, KJ Redfield and John Duszynski chipped in 10 points apiece.

A Smith layup gave the Stars a 16-15 advantage halfway through the opening stanza before the Eagles responded with a 15-4 run over 5:15 of play to take back the lead 30-20.

A triple by Duszynski trimmed the margin to seven, 36-29, with 2:16 remaining until the break but, Benedictine would end the half on an 11-3 run to distance itself from Dominican, 47-32, after 20 minutes of play.

The Stars' trailed by 15 points for most of the second half until a pair of Smith free throws cut the deficit to 72-60 at the 6:22 mark but, the Eagles quickly responded with six straight points to stretch the advantage back to 18.

Dominican did not go away quietly, responding with a 12-4 run of its own to pull the visitors within single digits, 82-74, with 3:11 to go.

The defense would get a pair of timely stops but, the offense was unable to capitalize as two empty trips down the floor allowed the Eagles to push the margin back to double-digits on their way to a 92-79 victory.

The Stars shot an impressive 44.8% (30-of-67) from the floor, only to be slightly outdone by the Eagles 47.3% (35-of-74).

"In the two games we have played, we have given up 95 and 92 points respectively," said Coach Mark White. "It has been much too easy on the offensive end of the floor for our opponents. We are learning as we go but, if we continue to play hard our defense will improve. Hopefully, we bring a lot more on the defensive end of the floor tomorrow night."

Dominican did hold a strong advantage from long distance, making 10-of-28 (35.7%) attempts, well ahead of Benedictine's 3-of-21 (14.3%) mark. The difference in the game was the points in the paint as the Eagles outscored the Stars 60-36 down low.

These two teams are back at it tomorrow afternoon when Dominican returns to Lisle for a 5:00 p.m. tip.
